World's Fastest Sailboat

To start off the New Year we have some racy news of the amazing foiler trimaran "Hydroptere". Recently, Hydroptere became the fastest sail boat on the planet. She was able to reach 51.36 knots over 500 meters and 48.72 knots over one nautical mile. This is faster than it took for the first aircraft to cross the English Channel ! The secret: The boat's foils lift the trimaran clear out of the water, reducing resistance by 90%. An amazing feat that will lead to further developments and will surely trickle down to the growing fleet of ultra fast multihull racers in the near future.

Wally & Aeroyacht Join

Following significant interest in the recently launched design of the luxury performance catamaran released by Aeroyacht, worldwide sales agent YCO of Monaco is pleased to announce that the famous Wally superyacht builder has been signed on as the official Aeroyacht shipyard.
Luca Bassani, founder of Wally said: "In the past, Wally has been approached by several multihull companies but has never found a project which would reflect the Wally concept of combining performance, style and comfort. With the Aeroyacht 110 catamaran however, the technical characteristics and aesthetics match those of our own yachts and I was immediately convinced that we would finally be able to apply our philosophies to Gregor Tarjan's beautiful catamaran"

Gregor Tarjan, the founder and designer of the Aeroyacht range of catamarans said:" Wally is renowned for their groundbreaking avant-garde designs, which constantly reinvent and reinterpret the traditional approach. Wally yachts stand alone in style and performance. Given what I set out to achieve with my Aeroyacht 110 catamaran, I do not think there is a yard which would be better matched to us"

Largest Ever Wing

Ok, the cat (actual -tri) is out of the bag! Team Oracle BMW have just revealed an enormous wing sail which they will be putting on their giant America's Cup trimaran. The wing is of unprecedented dimensions and actually 80% larger than the one of a Boeing 747. Go boys - Hike Hard! Anyone want to take a guess of who will win the Cup ? Take a second and vote in the poll on the top right of this page.

World's First Multi Show

Mark your busy calendar: We are pleased to announce the first edition of the "Multihull Boat Show" which will be held in Lorient, France - April 15-18 2010. As if we did not have enough boat shows - this one will be different. More than just an exhibition, it will be a dynamic and animated event, which will liven up the seafront and unite thousands of industry proffessionals, sailors and visitors. Over four days guests will be able to take part in demo sails and sea trials aboard the world's most prominent cats and tris. You will also have the opportunity to admire former racing multihulls and the ominous German submarine bunkers from the second World War.

Superyacht Elite

Gregor Tarjan, president of Aeroyacht was honored to be invited as one of the few delegates attending this weeks Superyacht Design Symposium in New York. About 150 Superyacht owners and elite industry leaders exchanged their concerns and views. One of the main topics centered around what type of new yacht an owner would buy. Not surprisingly all indicators pointed to multihulls. Marc Van Petteghem introduced his new schooner rigged catamaran while a representative of Abeking and Rasmussen promoted a twin hulled SWATH yacht. The symposium proved it first hand- Gregor Tarjan's Aeroyacht 110 catamaran seems to be answering all the needs of superyacht owners: More "green", more space, more speed while providing the need for less crew and less expenses.
At the symposium we also learned that Aeroyacht has been accepted as a nominee for the Best Newcomer of the World Superyacht Award 2010 in addition to the best sailing yacht award.

New Mecca of Multis ?

With next America's Cup being held in the city of Ras al Khaima (UAE) and the recently launched Oman Arabian 100 tri - the Middle East is quickly becoming the center of large multis. Open minded, devoid of conservative pre-conceptions and abundant new marina space make UAE and Oman sailors the future players in the world of large luxury catamarans.
After four months of assembly in Oman's southern most port of Salalah, skipper Paul Standbridge has been stretching the legs of Oman Sail's new Arabian 100 (A100) trimaran during sea-trials off the Omani coast. Now named Majan, after the ancient name for Oman, Oman Sail's new flagship is now operational and is heading into the Gulf and a tour of neighbouring countries. The launch of Majan is an ambitious addition to the project's mission to inspire a new generation of young Omanis.

Wally WHY - Outside the Box

Again legendary Wally Yachts have impressed with a leading edge design by launching the "WHY" project. "WHY" is (it) not a catamaran ? - rather it stands for the partnership between Hermès Yachts and Wally. This new joint venture has conceptualized a motor yacht that redefines the art of living on the sea in green style. In an attempt to move beyond the horizon of current trend, WHY has shaped up a boat that is contained in a triangular hull measuring 170' x 118'.
They get our vote ! - just wished it was a cat.

Annapolis Boat Show

Its the time of year where one boat show follows the other, giving us no reprieve and eager buyers the coolest new cats to choose from... The Aeroyacht and Fountaine Pajot Teams are eagerly preparing for next week's Annapolis Boat Show (Oct 8-12) where the Mahe 36, the long anticipated Lipari 41, Orana 44 and Salina 48 catamarans will be shown. Its the largest gathering of multihulls anywhere in the world - don't miss it.
We are looking forward to your visit.

Neel Tri - Just Makes Sense

"Just Makes Sense" are the red banner words painted on the main hull of the innovative new trimaran which was introduced at last week's La Rochelle Boat Show. At 50' overall length she reminds us of the clever fusion of a roomy Fountaine Pajot cat and a high performance racing trimaran. Eric Bruneel, founder of Neel Trimarans presents us with a new concept of fast cruising with a twist. On-board piano and eco head are interesting options.

Outremer 49 Launched

The long awaited moment arrived last week where we had the privilege to test the hot-new Outremer 49 in the South of France. Months of hard work (and no vacation for the yard) paid off- when the radical Christoph Barreau design hit the water. Innovative features such as optional tiller steering, striking interior by Frank Darnet and a very competitive price tag (base 520K Euro) will make this boat a winner in the marketplace. 6 boats have been ordered to date and the waiting list is starting to grow. Bravo my friends at Outremer Yachting. Gerard Danson would have been proud.

Aeroyacht 110 - has become Accepted Nominee for World Superyacht Award

The press have called the Aeroyacht 110 the "Wally of Catamarans" and French Magazine Decor at Home has proclaimed our boat as famed designer Ora Ito's favorite yacht. The accolades and international attention to our project have been pouring in unlike we would have ever expected. Now the Aeroyacht 110 has become Accepted Nominee for World Superyacht Award - an annual gathering of the top players in the industry. The World Superyacht Award is the greatest recognition a designer and builder could wish for. We in turn are working hard to make our boat the fastest luxury sailing yacht in the world.

Maxi Tri Shatters Atlantic Record

The world's biggest sailing trimaran has just covered 2 921 miles between New-York and Point-Lizard, UK in 3 days 15 hours 25 minutes and 48 seconds, at the average speed of 32,94 knots!! By improving the previous record of 12 hours 32 minutes and 6 seconds held by Franck Cammas in 2007, the twelve sailors of the maxi-trimaran commissioned by Banque Populaire hit their first record and reach the height of their expectancies. Bravo and hats off !

Cat vs. Tri ? You vote.

As the US-America's Cup challengers are fine tuning their giant trimaran "Team Oracle-BMW", the Swiss defenders pulled out all the stops. They have just launched "Alinghi" a monster catamaran that will go head to head in what might be the most spectacular America's Cup race in history.
The big question is, who will win next year? You be the expert. Study both videos and tell us your opinion (feelings of patriotism aside). Cat or Tri? Vote on the right top menu bar.

"Princess Chloe" - best E60 ever?

Some may think that only a brand new boat will be the best choice. Well here is something that might change your mind. "Princess Chloe" - a fully equipped, magnificent 2008 Eleuthera 60 catamaran is truly better than new. This full-time captain-maintained yacht is now for sale in NY far below replacement value. Her owner must make room - he is moving up to a Galathea 65 .

First Test - Lipari 41

For those of us who have been curious about the on-water performance of the new Lipari 41 catamaran - read the extensive test by French Multihulls World magazine. Gilles Ruffet puts Fountaine Pajot's newest offshore cruiser through its paces - and shares some interesting insights.

A110 Ahead of Curve

Godzilla vs. King Kong! The next America's Cup will be a battle of multihull giants and next year the world will be on the edge watching Team Oracle's monster tri stake it out against Alinghi's cat. Careful observers might have noticed the bows of these two vessels: they are reverse bows just like our Aeroyacht 110 catamaran which is ahead of its time. Some call the aggressive looking bows: ax bows or hammerhead stem - we just think that they are efficient and the future for large yachts or racing vessels.

Read Pete Melvin's (of Morrelli &Melvin) explanation of why reverse bows work better than conventional ones

Check out the movie and see Bourbon's reverse bows punching through heavy seas.

Plastic Fantastic Cat

The ultimate eco-statement: Turn 7,850,000 plastic soda bottles (that is a guess) - into a sailing catamaran and take the thing from California across the Pacific to Australia. De Rothschild hopes his one-of-a-kind vessel, now being built on a San Francisco pier, will boost recycling of plastic bottles, which he says are a symbol of global waste.
What grabs our attention about this ketch rigged cat are the splayed twin-headstay furlers on each mast and interesting crossbeam arrangements. Something that James Wharram could have dreamed up? Plastiki might not be a beauty - but hats off to a gutsy statement !

Reini is out of OSTAR !

Our Aeroyacht sponsored Austrian tri is out of the OSTAR! Bummer. Reini Gelder was leading the entire fleet of racers across the Atlantic as his port spreader on the mast suddenly gave way. He has returned to the UK to undertake repairs. A triumph of will and courage nevertheless. Hats off to Reini who dared to face the North Atlantic singlehanded in his 40' tri.

NEW Lipari 41 blast-off

Fountaine Pajot blasts off another new boat. The innovative Lipari 41 catamaran has nearly the same space in the saloon and cockpit as the larger Orana 44 yet is packaged in a 41' hull length for ease of sailing and for a very competitive price. We like innovations such as the rigid composite bimini that is stylishly integrated into the coach roof, a semi-flybridge (which keeps the Center of Gravity low - yet provides you with unrivaled views from the helm), a flush cockpit saloon sole with no steps and a sumptuous full length owner's suite (Maestro Version).

F1-style steering

What is the point of sailing at 20 knots if you cannot "feel" the helm ?

Outremer came up with a brilliant twin tiller style solution inspired by the F1 trimarans. Check out the new Outremer 49. This advanced Christophe Barreau design will have twin carbon seats with direct- control tiller-steering stations (in addition to a conventional wheel) - and will make you feel as if you are driving a beach cat. Next to the high level of performance you will also find a stylish and very comfortable Frank Darnet designed interior. First units are well underway with 4 boats sold and hull Nr.1 to be presented at the Cannes Boat Show in Sept. Oh, yes we forgot to mention.
The price is amazing !

Greatest Yacht Race

For now Team Oracle has won the race in the courtroom against Alinghi permitting racing the next America's Cup in giant multihulls. Will this ego quibbling never end? Let's hope that the NY court's decision will hold and that we will witness the greatest yacht race ever. Check out the sailing video

'Ax-Bow' MM62

Last week Lyman Morse launched an aggressive looking 62'-'ax bowed' cat. We had the pleasure to be invited to her first sail where we effortlessly hit 18 knots. Although greeted by typically cold Maine weather -chasing seals and dolphins was worth the nibbles.

Kites vs. Sails

Our friend Yves Parlier is pushing towards new frontiers again. He is working on a kite driven cat featuring stepped hulls (similar to his 60' Hydraplaneur) whose solar panels can drive electric engines. Read it here

Around the World in a Tri

When one envisions a world circling cruiser –images of a stately heavy displacement yacht come to mind. Now switch gears for a second. My friend Reini Gelder and his wife Sandra sailed around the world in their 40’ racer/cruiser trimaran – not once but twice, and are still together! During one of my commutes to France I had the pleasure of staying one night aboard their efficient tri, visiting the Eric Tabarly ‘Cite de la Voile’ and learning about the organization “Light for the World”

Reini is entering the OSTAR Single Handed Transatlantic Race next month. Follow him across the Atlantic here. Read the entire article in next months Multihull Magazine

Thunderstorm - goes to sea

My two friends Yury and Vladi are a bit special - but their enthusiasm for the sea has been finally rewarded. Last week they took delivery of THUNDERSTORM, their magnificent Eleuthera 60 catamaran.

By the time you are reading these lines, they crossed the Bay of Biscay, devoured several fish and emptied half their wine reserves.

Thunderstorm will be available for charter in the Greek Islands. Bon Voyage amigos !

Track for a Cause

It is not often we bring you news of events that have nothing to do with catamarans - but this one is well worth it.

Guys, it was never a secret that you were a certified motor head - now you have a chance to actually do something constructive about it. Forget your ego, pump some Ethanol in your Fiat and come to Watkins Glenn race track- April 29 and 30th.

This is a fundraiser - charity event for a friend of mine whose child has the fatal Duchenne disease (DMD) Remember, its not how fast you go but how much money we can collect.

Please spread the word and see you there. (bring rubber underwear)

Aeroyacht 110 Buzz

Our Aeroyacht 110 catamaran has created quite a stir in the international press. Some call it the "new Wally styled cat" - others "the fastest luxury sailing yacht in the world"...we love all the comments. Check the photo gallery here.

CATAMARANS now as e-book

Gregor Tarjan's bestseller CATMARANS, Every Sailor's Guide is heading into its 3rd edition and is now even available on e-books. If you go sailing and do not want to lug the hefty publication around on your speedy cat, reading an e-book might be the way to go. Check them out here - or buy the 2nd edition classic hardcover at Amazon. Original book also available at: Multihulls (617) 328-8181, e-mail: multimag@aol.com

Charter, Try, Buy

Have you held off buying your cat while hunting for bargains ? It's a good move as long as it does not stop you from getting yourself and your family out on the water this season. Check out http://www.bareboatsailing.com/ - they offer a beautiful 4 cabin Lavezzi 40 that can be chartered out of Newport RI. Aeroyacht will pay for your charter if you decide to buy later.

Marion Bermuda Ocean Race

Tired of day sailing your multihull ? Why not do the "manly" thing and join sailor's participating in the Marion to Bermuda Race - offshore classic. This is one of the few ocean races where multihulls are not banned (guess why). Contact Bob Gleason, NEMA's new commodore if you are interested. (sailfast@themultihullsource.com) or call 508 863 6760

Catamaran Dollars

In this challenging environment - how do we actually purchase our dream ? We feel qualified, have good credit but can we actually get financing ? The answer is yes with a capital Y. Now is probably the best time to get financing with interest rates still hovering around 6-7%. Hear it straight from Cindy - our friend at Newcoast Financial.

FP's eye popping incentives

FP announces some eye-popping incentives on following models including the Mahe 36, Lavezzi 40, Orana 44, Salina 48 catamarans. Economic jitters are not the only reason. Due to significant investments in their production facilities especially in their injection process for decks they are scoring high not only on quality but also obtained productivity gains that translate into savings. This is certainly creating a very favorable climate and incentives for customers who are close to a decision now. Contact us for details

Artists eye

You usually see him zipping around on his power catamaran chasing the odd sailboat - or hanging off a helicopter looking for the "decisive moment". Billy Black is not only a likable guy but has a great eye for boats - catamarans in particular. His images have graced most international yachting magazine covers including special assignments for Cruising World and Sail. When I visited Billy yesterday at his studio in Portsmouth he had just returned from the Caribbean shooting Sunreef catamarans - in December he was in South Africa documenting the evolution of the beautiful Gunboat 90. Who knows where he will be next. Well we have a very special project going on with Billy. More later.

Wishes from Nirvana

As we are sliding into the New Year our French friends are cruising in the South Pacific. NUSA DUA is their home. She is an Outremer 45 catamaran - a veteran of several crossings - she serves as their pied a terre, office and adventure machine. Jealous? don't be - just join them for a charter.
